The pilot demonstrator, the first of its kind in the world, was hosted by SSE (Scottish & Southern Energy) and located on Slough Trading Estate, one of the largest industrial estates in Europe.
The plant allowed Highview to practically demonstrate the power recovery phase of the system at scale of 350kW/2.5MWh and was fully integrated into the existing distribution system. The pilot demonstrator was designed to allow testing and demonstration of a full range of operating cycles and regimes, including operation with and without waste heat. First connected to the grid in January 2010 proving the integration of the key sub-systems and their operation within grid, and the capabilities of the system to utilise existing and proven technologies and components.
Having commissioned and successfully tested the pilot demonstrator, a liquefier was added during 2011 to form a fully integrated LAES System.
