Pilot Plant 350kWh/2.5MWh
Having commissioned and successfully tested the pilot demonstrator, a liquefier was added to form a fully integrated LAES System. The project was fully commissioned in July 2011 and ran until the end of 2014.
The (350kW/2.5MWh) pilot plant was connected to the grid and subjected to a full testing regime, including performance testing for the US PJM electricity market. In practical terms, the plant had operating hours equivalent to more than three years of UK Short Term Operating Reserve service.
In collaboration with the new Birmingham Centre for Cryogenic Energy Storage at the University of Birmingham, the plant has now been relocated to its new site at the university and was re-commissioned at the end of 2015 where it will be used for further testing and research.
