Highview’s system can be used:
•for pure power arbitrage (like pumped storage) taking advantage of the peak/trough electricity price differential.
•to firm up intermittent generation (e.g. wind, solar).
•to provide “shape” to must-run generation (e.g. nuclear, geothermal, waste-to-energy).
•to provide (simultaneously) peak-lopping electricity, back-up supply, cooling and an effective use for low-grade waste heat.
•to defer capital expenditure on network constraints (increased demand).
•to minimise the cost of constraints, particularly at peak, through embedded distributed generation.
•by suppliers as an alternative to purchasing expensive electricity to make up for unexpected shortfalls.
•to improve supply security in network deficient regions of the world.
